Matt Murphy Was Right. Donald Trump is a Great Man

By Pat Hickey

July 26, 2024

I wonder how Murph is doing.  God, I loved that kid!

I first became Trump conscious in 1989, while teaching at La Lumiere School in LaPorte, Indiana.  My wife and I ran a dorm called Becket House on the heart-breaking beautiful campus hugging a spring fed lake.  We had twenty-three young gents of the junior class in our charge and one of them was Murph.  Murph was a delight.  He has a Fred Flintstone mug attached to a head that was the size of a boulder in a Gene Autry western, to paraphrase Skinny Sheahan.  Murph wanted to become a billionaire.  He was a rock-ribbed David Stockman/Ronald Reagan/Russell Kirk Republican from the far western suburbs of Chicago.  Murph was built like a bull and owned a generous, merry-hearted savagery that was a delight to watch from the sidelines of Laker football.  He loved combat and dominated at middle linebacker but was a sucker for the draw play. Murph!!!!!!!!  Don’t Blitz on Every GD Play!!!!!!

I had Murph in English class and he constantly topped off his armful of books with Trump: The Art of the Deal.  I caught the lad yellow marking this flabby tome, when he should have been reading Billy Budd, during each day’s mandatory two- and one-half-hour silent study in the dorm.  I was perched at my desk in the common room situated between our living quarters and ten double occupant rooms of my charges and did my work as well as hush up the lads, look for and confiscate walk-men buzzing with Dead Head tapes, wake up sleepers and generally maintain the sanctity of study.  This required that I get off my broad manly ass and manage by walking around.

Murph was an incorrigible.  Sleep? You bet.  Eat his Korean dormy’s candy?  Check!  Read the Art of the Deal?  Only when not sleeping, or eating imported Haitai Cherry Marus from the Heedon’s round metal candy box. More than the Korean confections, Murph stuffed himself with The Art of Deal.

” Murph!  Eighty-Six that idiot’s tripe!”

” Mr. Hickey, Trump’s a genius and you’re just a Thackeray geek.”

“Notwithstanding. Get to work on your weekly essay.  It is Thursday and you have yet to write a lick.”

” I’m on it. Hey, what is Mary making us? Damn she can cook, Hick Old Man.”

I read the book. It is crap-doodle, ghosted by the guy who says that high energy is counter productive.  Really?  Relax and make millions?
I could never get Murph to abandon Trump.  I admire that in a man – fierce loyalty.  I am pretty much like that myself.  Hell, I’m still a Democrat. Don’t look like one, but I am. Loyalty is vital.  Bad people manage to win the loyalty of good people. I remain a Harry Truman Democrat.

I thought at that time in 1989 that, “There is nothing about Donald Trump, which could induce me to walk across a small carpet to meet him.  Not interested.  I know hustlers and users.  I have been in education since 1975 and that industry is jam-packed with creeps, grifters and protected incompetents.  Donald Trump might have made splendid member of the Obama Administration had he not gone on his four decades of gilded national hustle. He just might become President.”

He did.

Matt Murphy was a Trump man from Ronald Wilson Reagan’s final days, through GHW Bush and I must believe From Clinton through GW Bush, Obama and through the Donald J. Trump years and beyond.

I have lost track of Matt Murphy, but I too became a Trump believing and voting Democrat.

When I left La Lumiere School in 1994, Bill Clinton had won a second term and proved to be a lying Hillbilly scumbag with morals of twelve-year-old boy living above a cathouse.  My fierce Democrat inner core began to crumble. I went to work for Leo High School in 1995 as director of development, writing grants and hitting up a very generous alumni body.  I had my first encounter with Barack H Obama who was executive director of the Woods Fund.  He jerked me around over a $5,000 grant for scholarships to Black kids. Later, when “Barry” became a State Senator and guest on WTTW’s Check Please! The future Nobel Laureate and POTUS proved himself to be . . .a dope.  At a Leo High School boxing exhibition held at the Saber Room in Hickory Hills, IL a rather prissy Senator Barry complained with great dudgeon “Where’s the gate? How do I get in?”   To a Boxing ring!

I never voted for Obama again. Nor, for any of the weasels trotted out for the Presidency.  Joseph Robinette Biden has been a clown from the day he was sworn in as a US Senator. Still is – with or without dementia.

John McCain was a huge disappointment and Mitt Romney a wasted vote.  Hillary Clinton was Hillary Clinton and now Donald J. Trump as predicted by Matt Murphy in 1989 was my hold  the nose and vote choice.

I was pleased with the post-Inaugural Donald J. Trump because he enacted policies into performance.

I remember his pledge to the United Mine Workers and his subsequent failure to revive the coal industry.

However, Trump made America energy independent for four years and President Biden shredded that and our standing in the world. Biden handed Afghanistan over to the Taliban and signaled to Putin that a minor incursion on Ukrainian soil would be just dandy.

Prices skyrocketed and inflation out-paced wages.  DEI killed security.  Wokeness weakened our armed services. Red China goes where it wants to be it New York city, the Solomon Islands, or cornfields in Indiana.

America has no border.  Terrorists get waved over the Rio Grande by Biden stooges like Mayorkas.   The Department of Justice brands Catholics as terrorists and Merrick Garland helps Soros backed D. A.s destroy Donald J. Trump.

This past Saturday, a twenty-year-old killed a citizen and wounded a President and two other citizens. President Trump was shielded by brave and quick Secret Service agents.  Corey Comperatore tried to shield his family, but the twisted soul with a sniper’s rifle murdered a former Fire Chief, veteran and loving father and husband.

Donald J. Trump was shot and wounded but stood with grace and defiance.  He had my vote, but now he has my unwavering trust.

The hate that pulled that trigger came from the Trump deranged howlers in the White House, Congress, Hollywood and the Media. Candidate Trump says that he will re-set the American tables with the help of J.D. Vance as his running mate.

I believe President Trump. Matt Murphy was 100% on the money.

Born November 8, 1952 in Englewood Hospital, Chicago Illinois, Pat Hickey attended Chicago Catholic grammar and high schools, received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Loyola University in 1974, began teaching English and coaching sports at Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee, IL in 1975, married Mary Cleary in 1983, received a Master of Arts in English Literature from Loyola in 1987, taught at La Lumiere School in Indiana from 1988-1994, took a position as Director of Development with Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, IN and then Leo High School in Chicago in 1996.  His wife Mary died in 1998 and Hickey returned with his three children to Chicago’s south side. From 1998 until 2019, it became obvious that Illinois and Chicago turned like Stilton cheese on a humid countertop. In that time, he wrote a couple of books and many columns for Irish American News. When the kids became independent and vital adults, he moved to Michigan City, Indiana, Hickey substitute teaches K-12 for Westville, Indiana schools and works as a tour guide/deckhand on the Emita II tour boat. He walks to the Michigan City Lighthouse every chance he gets.

  1. I also held my nose while voting for Trump in 2016.
In 2020, I ran to the polls to vote for Trump.
In 2024, for the first time, I will vote for Trump with admiration.

  2. Pat,
Murph had common sense and could call out a phony, like Obama, a mile away. Trump is a patriot and anyone who does not vote for him is an idiot and we have plenty of those running around these days. One comment, the secret service failed and maybe even purposely failed. They had enough warning of a problem and never should have allowed him on that stage. Myorkas is the culprit and many others as well, Cheatle, seriously!

  3. Great chronology! Add Lindsey Graham to your list of failed Republican America fixers!
Trump lived in both political camps so he knows where the rot is. And, he follows his campaign promises check list. Let’s give him Congress, too, and wait for the media to betray us again!

  4. Pat Hickey, words of wisdom. Thank you for sharing your Matt Murphy experience. I wonder where Mr. Murphy is now having read the book and followed. I pray social media is curbed on Trump’s Twitter in the next chapter. Trump states his case and has follow through, a leader for our country. God bless you Pat Hickey.

    1. Angela: Agreed. There may be better choices than Mr. Trump, but they are not running in this election. My wife has always said that they should either take his cell phone away or break his thumbs. He should leave the petty social media behind, ignore them and stop letting the social media bait him, and empty the swamp.

  5. Great column! I believe the Secret Service did not do enough to protect Trump whether deliberate or incompetent with a poor leader who has since resigned. I also plan to vote for Trump for the third time and pray he wins because I believe our Country will be another Venezuela if Trump doesn’t win.

  6. The press and the Democraps hate Trump more than that love our country. If Trump said “ what a beautiful blue sky!” And didn’t mention the wispy white clouds they’d brand him a liar. They hate him because he doesn’t suffer fools and has their number plus he can’t be bought!

  7. Thanks Pat great article. Matt Murphy had the courage to follow his beliefs. I’m sure it was easier then to believe and admire Trump without what today is known as Trump derangement syndrome.
One of the joys of being retired are ladies lunches. We talk about politics in hushed voices so as not to be overheard. We don’t want evil stares to invade our time together. One has to ask how did we get this way? We’ve seen families not speaking to each other, and friendships end over choosing Trump. I’m amazed at the length some will go to scorn anyone who believes in Trump. How does love, caring, and respect die over politics?
Thanks again I’ve enjoyed your guest columns here.

    1. TRUTH!
So many of our friends bought the media lies and still to this day suffer from Trump derangement syndrome. I couldn’t go there because it’s been proven over time that anything the Left touches turns to s#*%!

We have reached a point where friends cannot discuss politics without worrying of being considered the dreadful MAGA supporter. We actually know folks who won’t fly their flag because neighbors would consider them MAGA (instead of patriotic Americans). The Left is winning this battle of division, I’m afraid…

      So sad…

      1. We got here because too many “good” people are weak. St. Augustine said every virtue begins with courage. Namby Bamby people too weak to fly the flag or stand against fasicist progressives are disgraceful. My FIL, husband and four of our kids served or are active duty. They deserve better citizens than you and your friends. Get a backbone!

    2. Well said Linda. It’s a shame that you lovely ladies have to speak to each other in hushed tones due to retribution, while the Left feels empowered to say whatever they want, wherever they want & feel as if they are the anointed and are always right. I have a brother like this. When they can’t argue a point, they yell louder & everyone looks at you(me) like we commited a crime.

  8. Congrats, Mr. Hickey, on one of the finest columns ever written and posted on this platform. God bless, Matt Murphy wherever you are! 🇺🇸

  9. Have been in the great red state of Indiana the past three days. More than a few Trump loving Patriots around here. Just wonderful to be with your people! The Dunes, the “North Shore of the South”. Awesome
What Jacques Marquette called the most beautiful place on Earth

  10. I think both Biden & Trump are geriatric & idiotic nincompoops. Biden’s polarizing actions & policies don’t make Trump any better than a “hold your nose” choice of a different set of polarizing actions & policies. The current VP if elected, she would just be a continuation of the current polarizing policies, so also falls in the nincompoop category.

Do any politicians anywhere really care about the middle and want to truly unify the country instead of just unifying their fringe, polarized “base” to stay in power? All we have is negative campaigning pointing at the other other candidate as the existential threat. Trying to honestly unify the country is my bar for a true *leader* that I would want to vote for, rather than just voting for the better of two bad choices.

    1. I just have to laugh at all these pure philosophical experts who look for the magic person who will unify the country. We were most unified a couple days after 9-11. When George Bush stood on that pile of damage and destruction and proclaimed that Soon, those people who did this will hear from us, or words close to that. How long did that last? The democrats always state, they are looking for a bipartisan piece of legislation on any topic. Trouble is, Shumer and Pelosi, and now that commie from NY, Hakim Jeffries, want it their way or no way. They want all their socialist plans and bills to voted on to screw all Americans. Some bipartisanship.

Exactly who would you suggest as that magic leader to unify the United States?
Kamala, Warren, Sanders, RJK jr., Hillary, Romney, Haley, Cheney, Swalwell,
or Biden’s magical Easter Bunny? Some mystical person living on a commune in Idago or New Hampshire. The left hates the right, the right hates the left and you are looking through your rose colored glasses trying to find the perfect person. Just in case you are wondering, Jesus died some 2000 years ago and Mohamed wants to kill the non-believers. I will be waiting for your choice.

  11. Let’s see:
    1. ‘brave and quick SS agents’. You include the DEI short female agents who bcuz of their height couldnt shield Trumps Head and shoulders. And oh, the DEI agent who couldn’t holster their guns. U mean those ‘brave and quick agents’.
    2. Bill Clinton with the morals of a 12 year old living above a cat house. Have you read of the multiple affairs Orange Man had including banging a porn star after his wife gave birth to their son. Cheating on Ivanka with slut Marla and then his cheating on her.
    Whats the difference?

    1. Aside from being the resident troll on John Kass News, do you tend bar in an imaginary saloon up in Mineral Point, Wisconsin? Rudd? Caesar? What is the difference?

    2. Did you hear Trump last night? He paid a compliment to the short agent because she ran to protect him. He also stated that she was short, but still brave.

The difference between Trump and Clinton’s morals might be who has grown up and stopped that nonsense. Clinton still has the energizer bunny running around and is most happy when his Shrew wife is out of town. Trump has settled in with Melania.

It is a feeble man who casts stones and will not forgive.

      1. Henry Kannry sez: “…and is most happy when his Shrew wife is out of town.”

Dude. Notwithstanding anything else about the man, I can’t begrudge him *that*…

      2. 1. Orange Man better say something nice about the DEI female (at least i hope they are and not Trannys, but with Demorats u never kno) SS agents. Or 1 of them might duck the next time he’s shot at.
        2. If Trump is now loyal to his wife it’s bcuz he can’t get it up. The ole schwanzstucker doesnt point up anymore. I’ve treated many a n obese elderly patients like Trump who are impotent bcuz of their massive fat. With a girth like his, we call it in medicine a ‘fat apron’, his schwanzstucker is covered by rolls of fat so I doubt he or Melanie can see it let alone find it. So if he is ‘loyal’ its becuz his willy don’t work.

        1. Stop with your sanctimonious bullshitting, Thomas. You’re a f’n pathologist so just exactly how are you treating “obese, elderly patients”? Hey genius, the only patients you treat are dead, so yeah, dead folks indeed “can’t get it up.”

          1. My, my Bruce, I upset u. So solly Charlie.
If you knew anything about medical training you would know that 2 years of medical school are clinical years (seeing patients, doing history and physicals, drawing blood/interprting results, performing and interpreting ekgs, performing medical procedures, assisting in surgery, interpreting radiologic tests, etc) followed by an internship were a young md does it all. And not everyone who goes into pathology does it right away.
Finally, a pathologist is known as the ‘doctor’s doctor’.
When clinicians are stumped regarding diagnosing and treating difficult patients they come to us for consulting and answers. We are trained by necessity of our field in all aspects of medicine and surgery.

        2. You are a f’n idiot. Listen genius. I am one of two physicians in the US with board certification in cardiology, anesthesiology, internal medicine and critical care medicine. I forgot more medicine than you’ll ever know. So don’t tell me about your f’n two clinical years in medical school and your inane one year internship as if this makes you the second coming of William Osler. If you are practicing general medicine based upon that, and think that you can do so proficiently then you are truly a delusional idiot. And a dangerous one at that. You are a f’n pathologist for God’s sake who has NO business treating live patients. Your proper place is not in the clinic but in the hospital basement performing autopsies. You should be ashamed of yourself. You are the most dangerous of all physicians: minimal clinical training (an internship? Are you f’n joking?) yet think they know everything. Well obviously you don’t. You are a gas bagging sanctimonious one man public health disaster. I actually can see why Guv. Pritzker told you to get lost. Because you really are a delusional asshole.

          1. I am BC and recertified in:
            1. Anatomic Pathology.
            2. Clinical Pathology
            3. Nuclear Medicine, where I diagnose and treated patients daily.

My, my, my you certainly are a potty mouth. Is that the best way you can converse is by using the F bomb. What a gentlemen!
Looked up the derivation of your name: ‘small man’. I think it fits!

    3. Trump has denied doing the horizontal bop with Daniels.
Do you have proof that he did ? Or is your proof akin to the
outrageous and blatant lies that Schiff and Schumer repeatedly
told Congress, that Trump was a Russian agent ?

    4. If there is to be “what about” and more “what about” – where is it to end? Are you deciding to discuss behavior while in public office and especially the Office of President of the United States? (Clinton?) or are we going back to before the person was even thought of as a candidate (Trump?). If that is to be your measure, then for honesty’s sake, we must re-introduce the dalliances of one Kamala Harris with then-mayor Willie Brown, cavorting very, very publicly all over SanFrancisco with a married man whose wife and three kids were tending the home fire, as it were. That was not just a brief fling, but an extended frolic, assistance in attaining positions of note, etc. If you decide to stay with “fun times while in office”, a quick read of Judith Exner’s book (Kennedy’s romps in the White House as Jackie was giving birth); Lyndon Johnson’s well-documented swims in the White House pool sans appropriate attire while accompanied by more than a few young ladies (none of whom were named Lady Bird); FDR’s passing away in the company of Lucy Mercer who had become Lucy Rutherfurd between their first affair and their second affair, most meetings arranged by Roosevelt’s daughter, Anna, unbeknownst to Eleanor. https://www.nps.gov/people/lucy-mercer-rutherfurd.htm

If we are to collectively see to the effective governance of the country going forward, may I respectfully suggest that the electorate will benefit far more if we concentrate on the ability of the various candidates to earn and maintain respect at the ever more difficult negotiating tables with head of foreign interests and other sovreign states. We had better be figuring out who is going to be able to stand up to China and to the array of others who would do us harm if we don’t know how to negotiate in our own best interests. That goes to borders, trade policies, tariffs, immigration, treaties, the EXIM bank, the Fed and the like. While I abhor the ‘play time’ many of them have seemed to enjoy, if we bog ourselves down in that concern, we are not going to survive as a country.

      1. My, my Bruce, I upset u. So solly Charlie.

        1. Addendum
          1. Ike’s mistress was his driver, Kay Summersby I think was her name.
          2. Gerald R. Ford had 1 he got ‘on loan ‘ from JFK (a former German spi named Rometech) Was very good giving ‘hummers’. Fords wife threatened suicide and hit the bottle.
          3. G H. W. Bush wife also threatened Bush Sr. With suicide if he didn’t stop his affair.
          4. Like father likes son, Bush Jr. had a mistress, who threatened suicide and succeeded, albeit 2 to 3 yrs later.
          And on and on.
PS Nixon apparently never had one. I guess even slut/whore/mistresses of the world have some standards.

  12. I know Mr. Rudd. Its almost like WE SHOULD SIT THIS ONE OUT. I know that’s not what you mean since you constantly point out that there are no real choices in this election. You would never say WE SHOULD SIT THIS ONE OUT. I’m positive that’s why you constantly post here about of the lack of character in both Trump and Biden but it’s not like you’re trying to say WE SHOULD SIT THIS ONE OUT. I’m hoping John does what Elon Musk did to Twitter when he bought it and only allows paying subscribers to post with verification. You certainly wouldn’t want fakes/ plants to get on your site trying to influence anyone by saying we should SIT THIS ONE OUT. It would certainly eliminate bots who constantly parrot the same theme of WE SHOULD SIT THIS ONE OUT. I mean, let’s get rid of the phonies already. Maybe WE WON’T SIT THIS ONE OUT. YA SEE?

    1. Thanks but I’ve always voted. Will again this election but not for Kackling Kamala or Orange Comb Over man. The American deep state govt gives us 4 POTUS slugs they can control, ie, Clinton, Obama, Bushes, Biden, etc so they can get there corporate tax cuts, aka socialism for the wealthy but Capitalism for the rest of us.
Will vote for 3rd party candidate.

  13. Thank you, great column.
The difference I see with Trump is this: he has the good manners to be gracious.
Yes, he cheated on Ivanka with Marla, but he did marry Marla. I didn’t see that with Clinton and Lewinski; Clinton spent decades trying to destroy that intern’s life.
Clinton and Obama enjoyed being Imperatores with no humility, Trump at least says thank you.
As for the July 13th shooting: Obama and Clinton would not even look back as they were whisked away by the Secret Service. Trump stood and showed defiance. Say what you will against Trump at the least this guy has some cojones.

    1. You have such high morals, wow. All one has to do is marry the whore u were banging while married. Oh then he cheated on Marla and married Melanie. What a guy! Great morals, like a dog in heat

  14. Great column and thanks for the laundry list of accomplishments that I can arm myself with. Much appreciated! These presidents of ours make a lot of promises, and mostly none are kept.

If Kamala ever actually articulates what her platform is, we may see the most DEI administration in this country’s history. Hello Communism.

    1. Maybe with Kammy we get to see a redux of the Joker persona that was used with 0bama. He had the makeup – Kammy could have that and add the cackle.

      And. Here… We….

      Go.

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  15. This election is Trump’s to lose. And if there is one person who can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it is Donald Trump. Biden was done no matter what. Now the game has changed. Harris is a new kettle of fish. We’ll see how this plays out. But I would not underestimate cackles. Trump all of a sudden is now the old geezer.

        1. Don’t read my comments if u cant stomach them. I dont bitch about yours. But I have a 1st amendment right. It seems u want to take that right away. Tsk, tsk, u commie/Stalinist/socialist, etc

          1. No Thomas, you don’t have a First amendment right to post what ever you want on a private site. The First amendment, genius, applies to government; not private entities like john kass.com or Facebook. You – and I – and everyone else here posts what ever we want UNTIL Mr. Kass (as the owner of this site) decides we can’t. Duh.

  16. An excellent column, it had to be as it showed up on John Kass. This “Bullet of an Assassin” story continues to drip new, disturbing revelations like a leaky faucet to the displeasure of those who passionately shriek for the anointed one, Kamala. Respected journalist openly opine their mistrust of Efrem Zimbalist Wray for numerous reasons including his assertion that the Trump, possibly, may not have shot with a bullet. A well balanced diet of John Kass, Dan Bongino, Tom Fitton, Tucker Carlson, Ezra Levant and Eva Vlarrdingerbroek depicts rampant greed and indifference orchestrated on a global scale via corruption of governments, media, education and the desecration of our sacred US Constitution. Accepting these truths from those who bravely tell them is an American Right.

  18. Great article Mr. Hickey! I enjoy your articles here. If you grew up in Chicago you understand we are all intertwined regardless of what part of the city we were raised. If you had talent & skills, someone always helped nurture that skill, embraced & mentored you. I believe that is gone. It is now based on unqualified DEI candidates. One of my favorite commenters here is Bruce Kleinman. A total gentleman unless pushed to the brink by people like Mr Rudd. He is a man totally committed to his profession. Look at his credentials! His patients & those treated by him are very fortunate to have him. I would love to have a Physician of this caliber.

  19. Excellent Mr. Hickey.

What is really sad is that these two candidates are the best America has to offer.

Of all the great people in the US, in 2024 it Harris or Trump.

Got to go with Trump. My family despises me for telling them that, but i reason with them its all about safety, and being energy independent.

Im tired of seeing the city i loved in shambles. The Feds need to prosecute, its unsafe. No one cares about the slaughter of black youth s everyday on city streets.

Im for legal immigration, not an invasion, people unvetted getting treated better than our fellow citizens living in poverty. I tired of reading about our young being murdered by the Fentanyl manufactured in China, brought in thru Mexico, killing our young. I like Trumps idea of going after the Cartels by burning the poppy fields.

The price of every day basic necessities, and fuel has sky rocketed.

The idea that we must embrace electric vehicles, electric appliances and heat when natural gas has served us so well.

Its a tough world we are living in today, this upcoming election will effect us for years to come.

  20. Abraham Accords yes, I also recall, while Trump was President, nascent talk about Korean Reunification. And when Trump offered assets to Russia to combat wildfires, Putin saying they he believe bilateral relations with the US were possible. Imagine this!

Trump is a New Yorker, the good kind. Momala is a “Coastal” and the very worst kind. Plus she will just be doing the Harvaardian’s bidding during his 4th term.

Real New York, vs the Coasts. My read at least. Praying for an honest vote

  21. Oh lookie.
The great Pat Hickey, the highly “educated” democrat is finally admitting that he has been a jackass for decades and is now crossing over to the side of sanity.
Too late. We sane folks don’t want or need you.
