How a City Dies: Woman Burned Alive on CTA by a Violent Career Criminal Enabled by Liberal Democrat Judges

How does a great city die?

Not by the screams of a man torn apart by demons as in Michelangelo’s “Torment of St. Anthony.”

A great city like Chicago dies with silent shrugs and quiet sighs, and the soft mewling of progressive politicians.

In Chicago, the great city shaped by Mayor Richard J. Daley and his son, Mayor Richard M. Daley there is a new policy, a progressive policy. It is not the law-and-order city it once was. Instead, the liberal politically correct Democrats who have followed the Daleys now refuse to punish repeat violent lawbreakers. The Democrats have become George Soros Social Justice Warriors and the newspapers also reflect the progressive view.

They shrink the size of the jail population, and congratulate themselves by refusing to punish violent lawlessness, enabling and promoting social justice judges, while releasing violent predators, all the while playing race politics to isolate the good and the lawful, and so guarantee a surplus of lawlessness and anarchy.

These are the hideous progressive sounds of Chicago political corruption: The jails are opened as the Cook County Democrats congratulate themselves, and violent criminal offenders are released from custody so they can attack the law abiding, again and again and again.

And there is another sound that defines it.

“Burn alive B****!”

That is what a career violent predator with more than 72 arrests–at least 10 of them for violent felonies–is alleged to have shouted the other night in Chicago after dousing a female Chicago Transit Authority with gasoline on the Blue Line CTA train and setting her on fire. No one intervened to help her. The 26-year-old woman, identified by authorities as Bethany Magee, is reportedly in critical condition.

And this comes as a violent riot among hundreds of teenager broke out in downtown Chicago at a celebration of the Christmas shopping season called the “Festival of Lights”, with at least eight shot and one dead in multiple shootings. The idiotic Mayor Brandon Johnson vetoed a plan that would allow the Police Supt. the powers to call for an immediate curfew when large teen groups converge on a neighborhood. Question:  How many families will dare spend their money downtown now? Nobody.

The Democrats and the hard Soros left have killed the once-great city.

Merry Christmas, Chicago.

“Burn alive b****!” is what the CTA fire attacker—repeat violent felon Lawrence Reed who has been arrested at least  72 times–is alleged to have yelled as he was arrested on Tuesday. He’s been federally charged with committing a “terror act or other violence” on mass transit


Lawrence Reed, 50, was out on pre-trial release for  allegedly knocking a psychiatric ward social worker unconscious in August, is federally charged with a terrorist attack or other violence against a mass transportation system. Before he was released, he had been before Cook County Judge Theresa Molina Gonzales. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office warned Judge Theresa Molina-Gonzales to keep him locked up or he would likely hurt others.

Judge Theresa Molina Gonzales refused. She had him released from jail and put on electronic monitoring. And she said something that comes out of the progressive hall of fame:

“I can’t keep everybody in jail because the State’s Attorney wants me to.”

Really? Is justice about dispensing favors and whining?

I keep mentioning the judge’s name, Cook County Judge Theresa Molina Gonzales so you’ll remember it. Those 13 words should be carved into memory.

This is a horrible story. Jeff Carlin and I touched on it during the Chicago Way podcast. For reporting on this, I’ve been relying on CWB Chicago on ChicagoCityWire. com and not the Chicago newspapers.

Why? I can’t trust the Chicago papers to report facts that would threaten the hard leftists who run the Democrat Party. The leftists took control of the papers years ago as I left the business and let George Soros control the prosecutor’s office without a peep of outrage. And the electronic media is just about mewling happy sounds. There is no substance save for Dan Proft.

The damage to the criminal justice system is incalculable as the pain felt by that woman and her loved ones as she was burned by a violent repeat offender on public transportation.

Democrats are concerned, but they’re not publicly outraged. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is to blame for this. But she won’t say a thing because she’ll seek protection.

She’s the boss, the picker of judges who emptied out the Cook County Jail and bragged about how she saved money via “decarceration,” as the jail population was shrunk and madmen like Lawrence Reed were allowed out to attack the most vulnerable.

For example, ChicagoCityWire.com ran a story that  exposed Ralph Meczyk, Cook County judge who let CTA “burn bitch” attacker free, is himself a convicted felon

“Cook County Judge Ralph E. Meczyk, the judge who issued a September order allowing CTA “burn bitch” attacker Lawrence Reed, previously arrested 49 times, to leave his home, is himself a convicted felon who served federal prison time in the 1980s.

“Meczyk, appointed to the Cook County bench last year, pled guilty to income tax fraud– cashing bond refund checks sent out by the Cook County Circuit Clerk’s office, but not reporting the income– in 1987.

“Meczyk, then age 36, and his law partner admitted they collected $35,800– $141,000 in today’s dollars– but paid no tax on it.”

Meczyk was pardoned by former President Bill Clinton.

But who made him a judge? The Democrats.

Brandon Johnson, the paranoid mayor and servant of Boss Toni, who constantly issues racial screeds about “black and brown,” said it was an isolated incident. Johnson offered up the usual Marxist gobbledygook.

“The level of accountability that has to happen in this moment, I trust that the federal level will do its part,” Johnson said. “All I can say is that as awful and as horrific as this tragedy is, this is an isolated incident. As we continue to invest more in our public transportation system, we want people to feel safe as they ride.”

No one feels safe as they ride the CTA. Not even if they had a shotgun in their lap. This one belongs to Boss Toni and the Cook County judges—Democrats who allowed this to happen—who are wearing the jacket on this.

The only judgemaker not mentioned in the stories about the woman burning on the CTA is Cook County Boss Toni Preckwinkle.

Democrats don’t want to talk about the fact that Democrat politics and the left wing newspapers give social credit for judges who won’t enforce the law. They don’t want to jail repeat violent offenders if they are black or brown. It’s ugly and racial, but it’s true. The people of Cook County feel the truth of this. And it is at the center of so many tragedies of repeat violent offenders destroying the lives of others, most of them poor, most of them also minorities.

And it is at the center of the politics of Preckwinkle’s protector, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and his infamous Safety Act which has done away with cash bail. The newspapers are progressive now, and congratulate their progressive politicians. And the people who are burned or those broken by thugs for money? They don’t provide utility to the political or journalistic class. They are summarily ignored.

In April 2020, Reed poured gasoline along the north end of the Thompson Center and set it ablaze because he had not received his Social Security (SSI) check, prosecutors said at the time. He started the fire as Gov. JB Pritzker was preparing to hold his daily COVID-19 press conference inside the building, but there was no indication that Pritzker was targeted or that Reed knew the governor was present.

That fire was caught on camera by a passerby.

Reed ultimately pleaded guilty to arson and received two years of “mental health probation” from Judge Arthur Hill.

Hill has since retired. But Mecyk and Theresa Molina-Gonzales are still around. And Pritzker is vulnerable here, as is Boss Preckwinkle.

But will the Chicago media make a case, and connect the dots to Pritzker and Preckwinkle? No.

A while back on The Chicago Way podcast, the great writer Heather Mac Donald, author of “The War on Cops” was our guest. I’ve linked to the podcast. I do hope you’ll listen to her entire interview. She’s clear headed about crime and the politics of crime policy, and the costs.

Mac Donald is fearlessly brilliant.

“People don’t want to put up with the violence,” Mac Donald said. “People who can move, will, because you don’t have to put up with this anarchy,” she said.

But she does offer a solution to Chicago and other towns.

“We know how to fix this,” she says. “You enforce the law. It will work.”

Pritzker and Preckwinkle understand. But they don’t want to fix it. They don’t want to risk enforcing the law. And since Illinois is a blue state they don’t have to enforce the law. They don’t want to risk angering black and brown voters who statistically commit most of the violent crime. The political class of Democrats won’t put black and brown men in prison, even though those same black and brown youths have been failed by the broken public schools and the Chicago Teacher’s Union again and again, until the only thing they can do now is to go on welfare or rob someone.

That young woman burned on the CTA by the madman who was enabled by Preckwinkle, Pritzker, Soros, and Cook County judges is in critical condition suffering from her burns.

You might think of her as you sit down for your Thanksgiving Day dinner and hug your loved ones as the great city of Chicago city dies, tormented by the leftists.

I think of what the great law-and-order Mayor Richard J. Daley would say, looking down on his beloved city as the young woman clings to life in the burn unit of Cook County Hospital.

“What the hell is going on down there?”

  1. I don’t get it with these judges that were once prosecutors. Judge Hill was a pretty fair guy back in the day. I’ve read Judge Molina was one too. What gives here? Drink the kool aid before being appointed?

  2. Who are these judges that are making decisions. It is not their JOB. The Governor and Mayor of Illinois are all about the City and State becoming black and they want reparations, and Michelle Obama is so bitter and hateful and such a Racists that goes around and make a speech about White People being Racists. Enough already, we are not Racists, NEVER HAVE BEEN, and we came and became Americans and love this Country and we did not come here to rape and kill. Who in Heaven Votes for these people. Do you know that Dead Bodies still Vote, and the Mailing Ballots are where they make up the Votes? Periwinkle and Priztker must go and we must get our Country back. The Libs put in hateful Judges and blame us the working class. Ridiculous folks. The young do not want to work, the business is not what it use to be and the Citizens do not pay attention and Elect Idiots to run our Cities and States, and Country that all Immigrants worked so hard for. It takes bravery to criticize Illinois power-brokers, exposing their cancer of corruption exhibited by Pritzker’s fear-mongering, Preckwinkle’s arrogance and Johnson’s insanity in demanding United Nations investigation. Does Brandon think UN bureaucrats will feel safe in Chicago ? He’s delusional.
    Here’s how Chicago City Wire summarized the career of one of those Democrat insiders ( I’ll call him “His Honor”) :

  6. Prepare a sample ballot that identifies the bad judges. Print it and ask your readers to forward it and the recipient to go ahead and forward it to someone else. Maybe you can include some of the idiotic decisions that the judge has made.
    We can call it the Judicial Scratch Sheet.
    If they know that the voters are looking at them maybe, just maybe, they will less brazen in their callous disregard for
    the rest of us.

  7. Is there a Cook County Judge who is not corrupt? Is there a Cook County Judge who actually does good work, is fair and just in their rulings? It has been, literally, decades since I have heard of an honest, fair and impartial Judge who actually considers all of the facts and rules in the best interet of not just those in front of them, but in the interest of those who may be harmed outside of the Courtroom.

  8. The new social “norms” of progressives are killing this once great city of broad shoulders. Layer on budget stupidity of ever increasing taxes and the only answer is to vote with one’s feet. I don’t think even my children’s generation will be able to turn this mess of a city/county around.

    Also, the irony that this year’s festival of lights to create a strong start to the shopping season in the local brick & mortar stores became a tragic event to repulse shoppers from our stores & city.

    One way to help start a course correction is to force progressives and liberals to endure the consequences of their policies. Nothing will make a liberal turn conservative on law and order like being a victim of a violent attack.

    But doing that exposes too many that don’t deserve it to the dangerous people allowed to prowl our streets.

    I’m sure old man Daley is doing back flips in his grave, as he observes the demise of this once great city over which he presided with such authority, and clarity. Remember his order “shoot to kill” at the dem convention? Who has enough “arkidia” to publicly declare that now, against criminals behaving like animals thr0ughout the city? Certainly not mayor Pannix! Without punishment, there is zero incentive to correct unacceptable behavior. Simple, just like raising kids. If they get away with it once, guess what? They’ll do it again and again, until mom or dad finally have had enough and put and end to that behavior. In my day, a simple spanking sufficed, with a switch I had to cut from our lilac tree and give my Mom to administer the punishment! Trust me, I subsequently misbehaved seldom, but even when I did, I still had to go out and cut “the verga” from the lilac tree. Maybe it’s time we bring back public flogging, in lieu of jailing criminals. Sure worked well for the Saudis! Oh well, just hopeful thinking…

    There are none. The criminal element knows this. An arrest is just a minor inconvenience that adds variety to their day. A trip to 26th & Cal, a bologna sammich and an appearance before a judge whose job it is to keep the jails empty. Go home and collect their welfare check, maybe commit another crime in the way or perhaps stop by their fave baby momma’s place and create another mouth on the dole to fatten their lifestyle. The cycle starts yet again.

Before the Bethany MaGee horror there was a couple Christmases back the young lady who was shopping on Michigan Ave. when an offender pulled a birch tree solid branch out of beautifully constructed Christmas streetscape potted arrangement and flung it at at a young woman’s head who ended up in a coma if I recall corrrctly. Before that incident there was a young woman from Maryland murdered in the south Loop. In between there have been mass shootings in River North. I can go on but you get the point. Let’s face it, we who remain try not to ever go in the city. You do so at your own peril. I turn 66 on Jan. 1st. It’s time to seriously contemplate my exit. Wisconsin? AZ? I cannot do FL.

    Just get it that the city of Chicago is in a death spiral. It’s not coming back, ever. Those who care about the city are moving out either to another state or heaven. Who remains is poor or one step away from homeless.

    What will doom the city finally will be tax revenues not keeping up with city (and State) spending. Public pensions are what does it in.

  20. John, it’s worse. The Bond Vigilantes are coming for Chicago. Chicago debt is having trouble at auctions. Airport bonds, secured city bonds, unsecured debt. The old flip and toss strategy of issuing new debt to cover old debt is going to meet the Bond Vigilantes in the marketplace. They like blood more than St. Anthony’s tormentors. Stuart Loren is a good follow on X for Chicago bond stuff. Funny thing, the MBAs in the Chicago City Council pay lip service to it, offer outrage, but no solutions!

  21. Great column John. You’d think Chicago would look at the City of Gary IN. and learn from the mistakes that were made there. Over 50 years ago anarchy began in Gary, and now look at it. I am a (retired) third generation police officer. My grandfather began his career on Gary Police Department in 1920. Though Gary is much smaller than Chicago, it was always referred to as the “mini Chicago”. The Chicago politicians better get the hint before it’s to late. Chicagoans can borrow our slogan we used back in the mid-seventies, “Last one out of Gary, please turn out the lights”. You all know what to do.

    As a kid, I looked forward to going downtown to see the lights and the Marshall Fields window displays. As I got married and had a family it was a treat to give my kid. Thank goodness that she is grown. City of Chicago is a hellhole. The city elite think that crime is good.
    So it should come as no surprise that even the real estate tax burden has shifted from downtown businesses to the homeowners. Add in the mentality that the city does not have a spending problem but a revenue enhancement problem so in a couple of years Chicago will make Portland look well grounded.

  23. John, I’m sitting here in sunny Texas, about 80 degrees, low humidity today. There’s a local food show here produced by local chef Chris Shepard called “Eat Like A Local”. This week’s episode features Houston restaurant “Christies” hosted by one of the family members still running the restaurant. Continuing the great tradition of Greek restaurantuers along with her family history included. Sort of like Vito Corleone being sent to the New World to seek his fortune without adding the criminality. The food looks DELICIOUS, if you ever decide to stop here let me know. Greek with a side order of Texas….

  24. The Leftists in charge in Springfield and Chicago have inherited the cascading effects of stripping out funding for law enforcement and correctional/penal facilities. They much preferred those funds be pander-spent elsewhere. There is no will or funding to correct that now. Poor Bethany Magee is a horrifying casualty, and sadly a predictable one.

  27. My daughter takes the Blue line almost every day to her gig near Ohare. I have to counsel her to not look at her phone while riding the train and frankly work hard to avoid any crazy black guys in her car. That little girl is younger than mine and I can’t read any more about her it hurts so close to mine.

  28. Well done John. I’ve been following this on CWB too. I’m glad you’re finally putting Preckwinkle in her place. She is the worst of the worst, is the most responsible, least visible, and keeps getting away with it. In some ways, she may be worse than the Michelin Man himself.

    What you didn’t mention is in light of the knucklehead Johnson’s claim of being “an isolated incident”, the following day…the very next day, two teens got jumped and robbed on the Green Line. Isolated my a$$. Maybe he needs to take a few rides by himself, not posse. Then he’d see the continued “isolated” nonsense.

  29. Good article John! The criminal court system in Cook County is a joke and has been for the past 50+ years. There were once a lot of good judges in the system, but they have been slowly weeded out or have retired. They have been replaced by social justice judges, a convicted felon,and other malcontents .

    The Cook County States Attorneys office was also ably competent,until the upheaval of being replaced by a Preckwinkle appointee, Kim Fox. It takes a lot of chutzpah to put in a convicted felon into a judgeship, but it’s another prime example from Democrats, saying “kiss my ass” to the citizens of Cook Country.

  30. The official response to crime in Chicago should be “ignorance is bliss”. If there is no paper on a crime then it didn’t happen. The police department is down over three thousand officers whom Mayor Johnson will not replace. Wait times for service are so long that many victims don’t wait and these crimes go unreported. Homicide victims are routinely found on scene hours after being shot since no one bothers to call in the gunfire anymore. Of course, one of the Mayor’s targets was the “Shotspotter” system that alerted police quite reliably to shooting locales. Except there was a flaw. It generated paper and reports. Not acceptable. The dismantling of these systems enable the city to keep pushing the bullshit of crime numbers actually being down. The legalization of crime is another strategy in Democrat run cities to drive down crime stats. If you legalize burglary, then you just solved the burglary problem. See? Problem solved. The monetary threshold of felony theft has been raised to the point where most retail establishments will not even report them. No paper. No problem. All of these enable Democrat-run cities to push the nonsense that their legal policies getting positive results. Unless you ask the people who actually live there that is. Rest assured, that if no one was actually shot in the downtown area during the Christmas festivities the other night there would be no reports generated and the whole thing given the police code of “unfounded”. Crime is down since it never existed. We are now witnessing the decline of these cities rapidly sliding into urban dystopia thanks to the Democrats and their pro crime policies. New York City, already halfway there, just decided to swim to the deep end of the pool to drown. Even Johns favorite newspaper tried warning New Yorkers that they would soon be sorry. We all know that they soon will be. Chicago elected one of these fools and certainly is now. Those that can leave DO.

  32. Many years back a crooked judge was ran out of his seat at the ballot box. Why? Because Royko kept his dirty deed alive with his columns to remind voters at election time to vote no for retention. His sin was to give “a pass”, a not guilty verdict during a bench trial of a steroid muscle headed punk son of a quasi- mob connected somebody, or maybe he was the idiot son of a connected guy…something along that line. This punk beat the face in of a female CPD Officer during an altercation and totally got a walk from the crooked judge. John, keep this new case and this Judge Molina-Gonzalez name alive to remind all of us that the ballot box can be a remedy.

In 1986, the late Cook County judge Lawrence Passarella lost a retention vote after (unheard of back then)after a series of rulings including finding a mafia punk innocent of beating the crap out of a female Chicago policewoman. It took a concerted effort by the FOP to spearhead the drive who will spear head the drive for Miss Magee?

  35. I’m guessing that the people that really need to read, and absorb, this column, the voters who put Johnson, Pritzker, Preckwinkle, et. al., in office aren’t in attendance here. I very seldom see any push back, rational or otherwise, to John’s columns. Either the other side chooses not to enter the arena of ideas for lack of courage of their convictions/beliefs or don’t have a persuasive argument that refutes those posited by John. If one of you is lurking out there, jump in tell us why Mr. Kass is wrong.

  36. A couple of points.
    1. In the 1960s or earlier we had a gov. By name of Shapiro, I think. He was very proud mental health. The state had mental health facilities everywhere, both inpatientcand outpatient. It worked reasonably well for being govt run. I worked as a mental health aide for 7 yrs while in college and med school (midnite shift).
    But then it became too costly to run. Plus the woke attacked it bcuz we deprived these nut jobs their freedom. Yup we did. They were keep institutionalize for their and public s welfare. So the State privatized mental health. We paid others to take care of the nut jobs. But they don’t do very well. They let the crazies roam the streets. And these owners of the facilities donate big time to the pols. Perfect!
    2. I’ve said before, I’ll say it again. Turn these criminals over to victims families for ‘rehabilitation and justice’. Works well and cost effective too. We used to call it: The Bridgeport Mental Health and Rehabilitation Institute.

  37. Dear God! I’m not sure when the City will hit rock bottom, but I hope it is soon. Then the only way to go will be up. I’m going to repost this column on Facebook. Maybe, just maybe a leftist might take the time to read it. Shame on those in The media who will not publish this or report on this. The politicians and judges are responsible for Chicago’s out of control crimes – they will one day burn in hell for what they have done. Trump needs to send in the national guard NOW.

    Meanwhile, Brandon blathers as usual, isolated incident, crime is down, curfews are racist, blah, blah, blah.
