Trump: Iconic American Defiance and Strength

The once and future President Donald John Trump has made the gesture before, pumping his closed fist in the air to exhort a crowd.

The other evening in Pennsylvania, he made that fist pumping gesture again. But this time there was blood on his face. He got up to his feet, bleeding from the assassin’s bullet, and stood strong with the American flag behind him.

The “phrase iconic photo” doesn’t do it justice.

And though he’d been shot, he wanted to assure the crowd–and foreign adversaries–that he was OK. I was watching on TV as were many of you, and I’m certain I wasn’t the only one thinking about two simple words:

Certified Badass.

It was inspiring, stirring and emotional. It was a message for all the forgotten to stand up and fight.

Only days before, the perpetually Trump Deranged Left had been whipping Democrats into a bloodthirsty frenzy, comparing Trump to Hitler and insisting if Trump was elected, democracy and the nation would end.

According to Politico, on a fundraising call to donors, Biden said: “I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate. It’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”

Bullseye?

Shortly after the assassin’s bullet came within a millimeter of killing him, Trump posted out the iconic photo—taken by Doug Mills of the New York Times–on X.

“Hardest picture of all time” Trump wrote. After being shot, he hit the ground with U.S. Secret Service agents swarming on top of him.

And then he stood up and to show the crowd he was OK. He pumped his fist again and again saying “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

The crowd began shouting “USA! USA! USA!”

And right then I knew—as did most of you—that the world had changed forever. The presidential political campaign had changed forever. He was alive. Yes, the assassin’s bullet took off a piece of his ear. But he was alive and fighting. He got up from the ground after being shot and was determined to fight.

What kind of man is this Certified Badass?

Incumbent Democrat President Joe Biden talks and talks about getting up off the ground to fight.

But Biden is the yammering of old man at the end of the bar, shouting in his cartoon Cmdr. McBragg fabulist voice that no one even listens to any longer.

Trump haters—Democrats and the Trump Hating Never Trump Republicans who promote with what historian Victor Davis Hanson calls “assassination porn”– were silent.

Finally. But only for a few moments. And soon they were at it again, throwing gasoline on a fire.

For more than 30 years Nicholas Kass served our country proudly at CIA, the White House, National Security Council, U.S. State Department and National Intelligence Council.

In January, Nick predicted the Obama-inspired coup that has now targeted Biden. He wrote that having unleashed the Deep State on Trump, Biden himself would be next.

Now that Trump survived the assassination, the Democrats took a pause, and said they were all about lowering the temperature. But then they pounced with vengeance.

These include Biden of course, and the shrill ABC personality Martha Raddatz; Rachel Maddow of MSNBC—the mad Madame DeFarge of leftist journalism—and those flesh-eating mares of Diomedes on “The View.”

Remember that just days before the assassination attempt, the perpetually Trump Deranged had been whipping the Democrat left into a bloodthirsty frenzy, comparing Trump to Hitler and insisting if Trump was elected, democracy would end.

Their prayers to darkness were heard by a madman, just as their prayers were heard when another left-wing Democrat madman tried to massacre Republicans who were playing baseball in a park. And the leftist media not only pressed Americans to forgive, but to forget, and stuff the carnage into a memory hole, and move on. But some of us remember.

My friend, fellow conservative Dan Proft, argues that we must be wary of those who would seed moral confusion.

“The problem is many high-profile pols and their festooned coteries of pundits and propagandists spent years rationalizing, condoning and even promoting political violence against those they now patronizingly call on to be calm,” Proft wrote on X. “Their false pieties only fan the flames.”

Consider the muted tones Democrats are pretending to use now, all their faux concern.

Americans might want to remind themselves on how Biden invoked the imagery of blood and death to smear all Republicans and the 75 million Americans who voted for Trump in 2020.

All the issues are against Biden and the Democrats, from ravenous inflation eating our savings and wages to at least 15 million illegal migrants–single men of military age from nations that hate America.

They’ve spent years spreading irrational hate, portraying Make America Great Again, Trump and most Republicans as Hitler, as racists, as fascists.

For years they participated in a Deep Stare coup process to hamstring Trump, take his money and destroy his companies, promote his ouster, rig the 2020 election through mail-in ballot scams, judiciously spending $400 million in Zuckerbucks, and using political  trials in a bid to jail him for life and ensure he cannot run for office.  And all of this in the name of the  “Democracy” they undermine and mock by very their actions.

And now he’s been shot.

But if desperate Biden and the Democrats, and all their corporate media stooges can’t rely on their Trump as-Hitler tropes, what do they have left to campaign on?

Nothing.

Do they apologize for bringing the country to unthinkable bloodshed?

No.

Does the left ever admit wrongdoing?

No.

But Trump has selected my favorite pick, populist conservative Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice-presidential nominee.

Vance grew up poor in Appalachia. He’s a U.S. Marine, a father and the author of a great book, “Hillbilly Elegy”

The left hates this man, because they’re desperate and afraid that the media lies won’t work anymore.

I’m all for burying the rhetorical tomahawks, and not in the back of leftists.

These are still our countrymen, our sisters and our brothers, And even though we are  surrounded by enemies and adversaries who would do us harm, most of us yearn for national unity, and purpose. But America can’t have true national unity if it’s based on lies and the political lies of omission. Then it’s not unity. Then it’s just manipulation.

We forget everything in America. We’ve been trained that way, to forget and move on. Forgetting makes things easier, I guess. Forgetting makes it easier to turn a profit.

But elephants don’t forget. Trump doesn’t forget. He was almost murdered because the left fears his politics and stokes hate. And I don’t forget, and I can’t forgive.

  1. And I just read last night that biden has COVID- I think that this might be the end for his campaign, and I’d bet that we see the wife of his boss running as VP with kamala.

    1. I honestly don’t think he has Covid. I think this is the 2024 version of “keep him in the basement so he can’t do any more damage to us.”

  3. I had to buy the shirt with the iconic image. I wore it yesterday while shopping at Costco. The lady at the entrance said, “Love that shirt! Trump!”
    Two Navy veterans met me by the Prime Beef with thumbs up. Several more customers smiled and commented about the image. Many just smiled. I could feel that they were fellow Patriots and Trump supporters.

    1. If that’s in Chicago, it unexpectedly good news! Down here in lowcountry South Carolina it’s been all Trump all along. When I tell my Chicago friends about the support Trump has south of the Mason Dixon, they find it hard to believe. The media up there had convinced people that Trump has no support except for a few deplorables deep in the back coontry!

  4. I’m NOT a conspiracy theorist but man do things smell fishy! I’m most appalled at the hate expressed by some saying too bad the shooter’s aim was off. How low can some people go?

  5. Only one question for everyone to answer. “Are you better off then you were four years ago?” Thought so. There is only one to vote in this election – ignore the propaganda, answer the above question, and vote accordingly.

  6. Keep up the great writing JK. Not only was Trump within millimeters of death, but possibly this country was within millimeters of spiraling into the start of another civil war. I agree with C.W Christianson, something seems fishy here, and I believe there is far more to this shooters story than what we are being told. I do hold our media partially responsible for what happened. I hold our politicians responsible for what happened. I hold the talk shows responsible as well.
    Are we really supposed to believe a 20 yr old had just about zero online presence? A 20 yr old had no social media accounts? A 20 yr old figured out all on his own the exact building to scale to get the perfect shot off on without prior intelligence being given to him? To make matters worse, the police were in the building he was on? All in broad daylight. OK.
    I also will not be surprised if Biden goes down from “Covid complications “ so they can allow him to step away graciously.
    I’m not a conspiracy theorist either, but there is just too much here that is not adding up. 2+2 does not equal 7 no matter how much the media tells you it does.

    1. I concur! Too fishy. I don’t know quite yet if it was a perfect storm or the young man had some help. I do know it’s not that hard to crack a smartphone, and for all the “information” the Secret Service and FBI extend us, there are people in the community of Butler PA who will tell us about Tom Crooks and his family, if only we’ll listen to them, and the lamestream media doesn’t mute what they’re telling us.

      I actually took the time to watch JD Vance accept the party’s nomination. I was thrilled for the Norman Rockwell moment of kin up on the stage after his speech.

      I was even more thrilled to see that JD’s mother Beverly’s escort for the speech was Speaker Johnson, and he was actually engaging her.

      President Trump seemed very paternal last night.

        1. I dunno. My suspicion is that it’s about 50-50. And, the more that I hear/see of what’s trickling out, the more that ratio is skewing towards an ordered hit.
          I really hope I’m wrong.

    2. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, flies like a duck and swims like a duck, it must be a duck. Anyone who believes the government about anything doesn’t have a clue. The government lies about economic statistics of all types and then issues corrections months later when no one is paying attention, and the media buries the correction on page 29. It is all lies.

    3. “Conspiracy theorist”? Not at all. All of our past “conspiracies” have come true. We are just keeping our eyes and minds open.
      As the saying goes- “If you aren’t outraged, then you’re not paying attention.”

    4. I use a range finder for golf. The shooter used it to know the exact yardage.
      CNN live-streamed this rally and had not done this at any other rally’s…!
      FBI says they cannot find anything about the shooter motives? Sure.
      Secret Service cannot find cocaine source in the White House.
      Let’s all think about how bad things will get when Trump begins taking many institutions down. The Left will be screaming and we will need to close the door on their tantrums.

  7. The venomous rhetoric from politicians from both sides of the aisle brought us to where we are today. Both parties’ existential issues, over which they whip up fear/anxiety/anger in the populace, are never ending…

    I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the choice between these two geriatric nincompoops for president is an embarrassment. If JD can tack back to “Hillbilly Elegy”, which talked to me and I think talks to the majority of America, he’s a breath of fresh air. Tacking back to the middle after conventions is what the politicians used to do to win elections – tacking back to the middle is about leaving the venomous rhetoric behind.

  8. Who knows who the kid chatted up a day or two before. Geeky kid on a bike. No worries. Bullied, tossed off the school rifle club because he was an unsafe shot. Typical of non gun owning folks it was reported he had “dozens of rounds of ammo” with him. A typical box sold in any gun store has 50 rounds of standard ammo. Had he been using hollow points, 25 or 50 rounds. HP ammo is more expensive. Maybe you have one or two clips worth and numerous boxes of slug bullets for target practice at the gun range. My bet is simple — he wanted to prove he was a good shot and this was his “premier”!
    Biden now “receptive” hmmm. As one of the CNN pundits asked (Gasp) who’s been running the country? Well anyone with a brain has been watching and wondering for some time. By Aug 1 he will give it up. Covid will take him down to the point he cannot campaign. I look at so many friends and fellow Trump supporters. Some of the most rational normal people I know. One only has to look to Biden’s cabinet and policy wonks to see the freak show of outlandish ideas and behavior. The big new tent of the Republican Party (Jimmy Hoffa’s successor speaking??) is of the people and by the people and shall not perish from this earth.

    No matter what is determined to have motivated the shooter, I am astounded that now the Secret Service has admitted they also had intelligence of Iranian agents targeting Trump.
    And THAT security failure was the result?
    What would a trained enemy sniper have been able to do?

  11. On Saturday, while watching the events in Pennsylvania, I started scrolling FB to see what people were saying. The first comment I came across was from a woman who claimed that the shooter must have been a “Crazed MAGA supporter”. That saddened me because the subject was the shooting of a Candidate and former President of the United States. How could someone think like that. Then later I came across a discussion of a bar in Lake Worth Florida where the owner posted disgusting signs such as how could the shooter miss outside his bar and was angry because people were protesting outside of his establishment. He said it was a joke as were the many other signs about his feelings against President Trump. I guess the people outside protesting were not laughing.

    Political campaigns have made me sad for a very long time because of the ever increasing hatred being expressed by candidates and their supporters. I have not watched a Debate in years because all they do is try to paint their opponents as filthy swamp rats. Very rarely do you hear what their vision is for the future of this Country. Conventions used to be about Goals and Platforms. Now we have a bunch of Media people sitting around tearing the speakers and candidates apart. They call that commentary. Really? I call it something else entirely.

    I was young when President Kennedy was assassinated. I still remember that horrible feeling that went on for a very long time. I do not ever want that feeling again.

  12. An innocent father and husband was murdered, the leading presidential candidate almost so. Two others in hospital. And the Biden deep- state bureaucracy woman Cheatle leading the DEI impacted Secret Service says the roof was sloped so they didn’t put anyone up there as a precaution. The progressive led bureaucracy wants Joe gone! He served his purpose as a puppet and now is useless to them. The deep-state bureaucracy is about protecting themselves!
    Vance is a good pick for Trump, with more conservative credentials. It will be fascinating who they pick to run behind Kamala, who they cannot toss to the side as progressives. Hopefully, Trump will be uniting in his acceptance speech. The investigation process on the attempted assassination will turn up lots of ugly, including plenty of bureaucratic lying and hiding the truth. “You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free!”

  13. Let’s hope Trump rises to the occasion tonight at the convention with the dignified, sober speech of a national leader. Not the grievance cheerleading of his past rallies. He needs to reach the undecided independents in the middle, not energize his base.

  14. First of all, Saturday. The TV was tuned into the rally. My husband ran downstairs where I was folding laundry and said “Trump’s been shot, they shot him”. My heart sank, I could hardly breathe, and my thoughts went immediately to that day in 1963, a day I will not forget even though I was just 13. I ran upstairs to watch, in shock and disbelief. I watched as Donald Trump stood up, bloody but ALIVE, pumping his fist yelling those words. Chills down my spine, and tears, tears flowed…..in relief! We came within a hair’s breadth of living in a completely different country. My fear is a repeat attempt by yet another evil sicko, fueled by the unhinged leftists. Great article in these crazy times that keep getting crazier ~ thank you John.

  15. Trump as “certified badass”. Thank you Mr. Kass, as par always. I was up in Milwaukee last night, tight security, Coast Guard gun ship in the air. Heading up tonight for what I anticipate will be one of the best nights of my life, where I went to school (Marquette) and where I was born. ALL of my Southern Planting Patriot ancestors as well can recognize Donald Trump south of the Mason Dixon line for sure! But they also can recognize his wife. Her open letter, OMG what beautiful writing – bad ass writing as well. Compare Melania with Jill. Its not a fair fight

  16. There are still some things out there that bother me and bother me a bunch. We keep pointing to Biden. It’s not Biden. He has no mind. I think it’s finally about time the curtain gets pulled back and show who the wizard really is. All indications point to Obama. How does it get addressed ? When ? How does it get proven ? Will exposing the traitors and their proper prosecution wake up more and more people to this nonsense, leaving only the far end nut cases to deal with. The images of on line posts of everyone from the countriest of country bumpkins to “media darlings” to the most troubling, assorted Congressmen around the country wailing how it was too bad the shooter missed and that someone else needs to try again. Comments like that from an elected official are appealing.

    This is hitting all too close to home. From the Obama suspicions to the sudden front page photos of the “impeccable” Dick Durbin, crawling out of a hole to call for Biden to quit. Now they want to delay the process, whether the actual DNC or at least the nominating process. Probably create some unethical rules to achieve the goal. Covid ? Ha ! Biden has had at least 6 shots, the vaccines are supposed to work, they’re safe, right. Yet he has, how conveniently, Covid, the creation of the American left. So, was it legitimately contracted ? Doubt it. Was he intentionally exposed ? Maybe. Was he injected ? Possible. More than likely it’s just bluster to force him off the stage and out. I mean, if Joe has it, why doesn’t the good “doctor” or the coke head convict have it ?

    Trump or Vance may and should win. But the problem will continue to exist until the true traitors are legitimately identified and dealt with like traitors should.

    Many of us are still in shock. I’ll never forget the screams of a woman in that crowd. Then there is the story of the doctor who attended the rally who went to the father who lost his life. Trying to do what he could.
    I was reminded of then President John Kennedys assassination. I thought oh no I can’t imagine another president being shot in the head. President Trump instantly dropping gave me pause. My breath held. Then he stood up. I said thank God. I’m amazed at all that he has been put through. He is one tough man.
    A few moments later on fb there were comments one stated a marine wouldn’t have missed. What the hell? It’s hard not to be angry. I can’t fight stupid. So I made a contribution to the Trump campaign for president in the amount of $20.24 in their name. Yes that made me feel better.
    There is still so much now to sift through. Should Cheatle resign? Will Joe withdraw? We shall see.
    Prayers and condolences to the loved ones to the man who lost his life.

  18. Thank you for your column. I have “binge” watched TV since I saw the senseless shooting at the PA rally. I was thrilled to hear the Speaker of the House say an investigation was being conducted. If this disgrace is not entitled to a special investigation, what is? This really smells! The DOJ is not to be trusted. When Donald Trump becomes our President again, he will fire them one and all! I am praying for the man who lost his life and the others who were injured. God Bless Donald Trump and God Bless the USA.

    I’m watching all our USA news from Ikaria, Greece, unfolding on my cellphone, as there has been scant Greek media coverage of the attempt on Trump. And to think Winston Churchill saved Greece from becoming 100% communist – that Stalin wanted and FDR almost conceded! “Homeland of Democracy”…well, still 10% Communist – but suspect much deeper!! Such a tragedy. My countrymen and yours should be ashamed and ally themselves with the USA and Trump before it’s too late! Til then, they remain a 3rd world country at best! Trump warned them about Russia, but no one listened!

  23. Vance is a nod to the future. Trump knows he has 4 years to set up the person who will usher in a refurbished, stronger and more citizen focused Republic. Trump will be attacked for his entire 2nd term, Vance will have to get busy and take the reigns into 2024 and beyond. Humane immigration, disengaging from warfare. Be at the ready to make war so horrible on rogue nations that they don’t want to fight it.
    Unleash the people to express themselves and hash out differences in the digital and public squares. Most of us have switched positions from childhood-young adult hood to curmudgeon with experience and a skeptics eye.

  24. As I posted on my FB newsfeed, the weak, pathetic cowardly snowflakes (my family is not immune from them) in this society have no clue what is coming in November. This man is a LION! It doesn’t matter what combination of Bolsheviks they put on their ticket. Everything changed Saturday. As I write this we don’t even know whether the IC let it happen through a combination of fatal indifference and incompetence. That alone is a shocking true statement. Certified Badass, yes. But more importantly, it is the Lion who is going to save the republic from loathsome liberals who have morphed into fascistic commies! I am also seeing lately a cyber version of the “Hate has no home here” message. It goes something like this: Don’t let two men who you will never meet come between you and a family member or dear friend. That, my friends, is a bunch of crap!   25. Excellent JK. What bothers me the most our the comments posted about the accuracy of the shooter. Then the comments about it was a staged event.

    Nothing about the three other men shot, couple of lines about the man who died shielding his family, where is the out cry that three Americans exercising their Constitutional rights at gathering where shot, maimed and one murdered.

    A STAGED event?

    We have become barbarians.

    Like either Trump, Biden, or Kennedy; disagree with their politics but remember all these men have families and are loved by those families. Would any one want to lose a loved one under those circumstances. To hope for the loss of any ones life, a man, a dad, grand dad, husband, brother, is pathetic.

    Over politics? Forget the politician, think of the human being.

    Last I heard that is the job of the Almighty, not man.

    This will be remembered for eternity.

    Now in my Chicago its a every day occurrence, but those life’s just become insignificant the next day, only remembered by the families who loved them, and the patrol cops and detectives, the CFD paramedics who worked thru the carnage.

    Sadly none of the candidates running for president is the best this great country has to offer, but remember at least we have the choice to make the decision.

    We can say terrible things verbally and on social media, we have free speech, and once had a independent media to monitor our rights as citizens.

    We forget because of the sacrifice of those men who led the rebellion against the English, and those great military veterans who died, shed blood and gave their time, so that we have a right to vote, speak and live in a democracy.

    This was a sad day for the US, a nut with a rifle was bad enough, but to see some of our own citizens wishing death, on a former president, makes me believe we as a nation our going backwards, on the brink of civil disorder.

  26. I am not now, nor have I ever been a Trump fan but am really glad the shooter missed, and we don’t have yet another assassination to deal with in our history. Everyone has a right to their point of view and should not be worried about getting shot for it.

    I cannot vote for either of these gentlemen and JD Vance is a hypocrite as he conveniently shifted from never Trumper to sycophant to get ahead. Kamala could not run a Dairy Queen.

    The country is in trouble if this is the best we can do.

  27. The fact that the woman running the Secret Service still has a job should tell you all you need to know about this assassination attempt. She blatantly lied to a reporter about the steepness of the roof being unsafe to station agents on top of. A ladder on site? How did the assassin get a rifle if he had already been searched? It only leads to the assumption the rifle had been placed there prior. If Biden were to fire her she will lawyer up and threaten to talk to the media. At least before our Deep State solves that “problem” also. The COVID virus was unleashed upon us to prevent the first reelection of Donald Trump and to enable the theft of it with the ballot harvesting conducted by the Democrats. Yes COVID was big.   29. I’m hoping Trump will win, and the Biden campaign goes down in flames….but I think the real work will come after a Trump victory. Trump will still have the unabated hatred of him by the mainstream media, and they will take every statement of his and twist it around so that it makes no sense. Remember when the media said that Trump told people “to inject bleach” to prevent COVID? The media will continue to lie about what he says, and I don’t know how a second Trump administration will deal with these lies. If Congress falls into the hands of the Democrats, then it will be one impeachment after another, and the public will begin to weary of these Washington events.
